To Do….Done!(A Response)

Sharon now (June 7, 2016) responds to Sharon then (June 7, 2012)

Answer: (To a question posed four years earlier) Yes, it’s okay to say, “And a child will lead them?”

Questions posed on an earlier post on (June 7, 2012)

“Could we really inherit a life as a “victim” because we were born into the realties of our parents and ancestors. Because she was raped, would it be inevitable for me. Can’t I escape the pattern.”
“Can I be the one to break my families generational curse?” I knew who I was talking to even if I lie alone in a room shared with only my fears and convictions. I knew if I asked loud enough, it would be heard.
As I sit tonight in a dorm suite on the 5th floor of Emory Universities Campus, I am reflecting on how I became a 41-year-old UNCF Mellon Scholar, Spelman Junior, Harvard Divinity and Diversity Exploration Alumnae working on a Ph.D. prospectus with 54 great minds from across the US and South Africa. I know that the questioned asked at age 14, was answered at age 41. It is day 7 of the Mellon Summer Institute. I am loving every minute of learning, every encounter with young scholars and every class that we are attending. I have found my way. Yes, I can be the one person to break multiple years of my families generational curses…and I have won! It had been done, and I have proof!

Today my photos below and my earlier social media post will capture the current climate within my family.

“Sha-Hanna Saffold (My daughter born to me at age 18. I dropped out of high school to have and now have completed almost three years of college alongside. Posted to Facebook June on 7, 2016.)
FB family Sha-Hanna Saffold did much more than I asked her for!!! I charged her with being the one to break the family generational curse as a first-generation scholar. She clapped back by BREAKING HER BACK AND SHOWING UP SPELMAN STRONG WITHOUT LACK!!! She said….now take THAT! AND THAT! She set a new standard and held the door open for her mother and sisters to run-through with her. Wow! You make us all proud!
Joining me in saluting my Giant scholar of a daughter!
Sharing a graduation photo shot taken the day after on May 16th.

“Class of 2016″ – Bachelor of Arts International Studies, President Mary Schmidt Campbell
Gates of the Millennium Scholar
Spelman WELS (Women of Excellence and Leadership)
WiSTEM (Women in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics)
Emory Medical Research – (Published in a Journal)

Making her the 1st to graduate under two different Presidents and the 2nd to get a Biology and International Studies Degree simultaneously! What a way to make history sweetie! ‪#‎MyDaughterAreGiants‬ ‪#‎MyFamilyIsFullOfGiants‬ ‪#‎ShaHannaIsAGiant‬”

Serenity S’rae (My daughter born to me at age 26. Posted to Facebook on June 5, 2016)
“Soooo this JUST HAPPENED! Serenity is NOW at Emory with me! What an awesome feeling! I have the same lunch and breakfast hour as Serenity at the same place! She asked me not to stalk her and embarrass her, and that’s when I realized that she is NOT Sha-Hanna Saffold, who adored being on campus with her mother. Oh well! She is going to look up and see me smiling from a distance. Ironically the Opera singer who performed at the very first Giant Event is her Camp Coordinator, and he is looking forward to performing at the five-year celebration of the Giant Event in 2017. Today was a good day! ‪#‎GiantsAtEmoryUniversity‬ ‪#‎TheGiantEvent2016‬ ‪#‎TheGiantMovement‬ ‪#‎TheGratitudeMovement‬”

Not Always Happiest. But Always Thankful.

Not Always Happiest. But Always Thankful.

November 24, 2012

I just wrote my first ever letter to God.  At least the first that I can remember.  I suspect that this will be the first of many.  I wrote down a lot of deep and difficult emotions that in the past I would have never committed to paper.  Though I didn’t save it to hard drive.  It felt good.  It felt good to be honest about disappointments, unhappiness, selfishness to be thankful, hopeful and regretful all in the same text.  The best part about it was that I actually did it, I wrote it.  I freed myself of the feelings of shame for having had some of the thoughts and past angers that I have had.  I would be lying if I said that after committing my thoughts to paper the issues were resolved, the pains suddenly dissipated and the wrongs were set to right, but that wasn’t the point of it anyway.  At least not for me.  The point was to not be in “Motivational Speaking” mode.  To turn the positive thinking off for a minute.  To dial it back a bit and to allow myself to actually feel the real and raw feelings that only I have.  I was amazed at how human I can be when I don’t commit myself to trying to live always as a “super human”.  I am back to my normal mindset of only positive thinking, but now, I have a place to escape when I feel that I need to.  I can speak of all of the unspeakable wrongs both committed by myself and others.

Commit yourself to self development in a way that works best for you.  Do it in your own way, in your own time, but do it.  Afford yourself the opprotunity to possibly become somebody different then who you know yourself to be.  You may not like who you are always, in-fact you won’t always be likable.  However, you will always be stuck with you.  So since you’re soaking in your own soul, why not explore it!

May the possibilities that place you at your best await you.

Making happy messages my future with plans of remaining happy.  Happy Thanksgiving to you.  Make it a great day!

Happiness In The Form of Words

Happiness In The Form of Words

“You are my new role model.”, as spoken from a young elementary school girl.  She had been moved by a presentation she sat thru that involved me speaking of battery, bullies, bad people and pain.  The second half of the presentation I proudly spoke of redemption, regaining strength, self-worth and self-love.   Who would have thought that an elementary school age girl could see clearly pass my past and into my future.  “Me, a role model?”  I silently thought, though you would not have notice my inner questioning because of my outward large grin.  Displaying nearly all of my teeth, I stooped down beside the beautiful brunette haired girl, my face pressed against her and my eyes wide with a twinkle that only I knew the reasons why. Lights, camera, captured, our picture was taken.  I am happy. This young Girl Scout had just changed my life.  I wonder how old she will be when she discovers it.

To Fight The Unbeatable Foe.

To Fight The Unbeatable Foe.

September 3, 2012

I listened to the late great Luther Vandross sing to “The Impossible Dream,” like it was a broken record today.  I shared the link from YouTube, with you below.  Each time I replayed the song it felt as if I were requesting from the “Cyber DJ” what one would call a do-over.  It bought childhood back again.  How beautiful innocence is.

To fight the unbeatable foe: I remember the big bad wolf in Little Red Riding Hood, the giant, in Jack and the Beanstalk, the wicked witch in the Wizard of OZ.  These stories still remind me of some of the biggest bandits and unbeatable foes.  However, in the same book, I am reminded of some of the greatest victories.  When the stories of our childhood become real life scenarios where do you find the strength to fight the unbeatable foe?

If I could share with you the one thing that I know to be true.  I have found that at the end of every story someone was victorious and someone was defeated.  Who is unbeatable?  Defeat can be challenged.  Fight for your right too fight!  You cannot win against the “unbeatable” if you don’t show yourself prepared to fight…and then fight to win.

Whom ever your foe.  What ever your fight.  Show up in life and fight for it!  You can be the unbeatable, though you may never be a foe.

Simplicity Has It’s Place.

Simplicity Has It’s Place.

September 2, 2012

Roses are red, violets are blue…  This simple poem has a place in nearly everyone’s heart.  Why?  Because you can remember it.  The things that we can remember seem to be the things that leave a lasting impact rather positive or negative.  Today, I want to pass along some simple sayings, quotes and song titles, some whose original author’s are unknown to me. It is my hope that they will find a place within you where one or more of them can set up residency and aid in generating positive change.

  1. Bloom where your planted.  -Afghan Proverb
  2. Give me my flowers while I’m living.  -Amazing Rhythm Acres
  3. Don’t talk about it, be about it.  -Usher
  4. What doesn’t kill you makes you stronger.  -Kelly Clarkston
  5. Those that doubt, go without.  Those that believe shall receive.  -Elder Pellum
  6. Almost doesn’t count.  -Brandy
  7. Don’t worry.  Be happy  -Bobby McFerrin
  8. Just do it!  -Nike
  9. Dream the impossible dream  -Joe Darion
  10. Turn No around…and it’s ON now!  -Sharon Saffold

My friends, please take a quote and place it in your current life and see if it can lead you up and out into your new and amazing you.  Each of the quotes are simple and easy to remember and each have their place.

Blocked or Blessing? You Decide.

Blocked or Blessing?  You Decide.

September 1, 2012

“God only moves out of you way, what was in your way in the first place.” S’rae Saffold.

Change, rather good bad or indifferent is certainly inevitable.  When do you know if the change that you are experiencing, or that you fear, is a blessing or a blocking?  Are you being blocked from a blessing, or lead away from pain, and how do you know?

Are there many signs that you wonder about?  I will not have the exact answers that lead you to a decision, but I can certainly give you thoughts to marinade on.  When I am often faced with situations and/or circumstances that present themselves as either challenges or opportunities to change I often gauge how to respond using the several principals listed below.

  1.   Am I hurting anybody to include myself?
  2.   Am I responding out of fear?
  3.   Can this decision be undone by making another decision?

If the answer to all three no matter the outcome, brings me back to happy, then I am happy to accept the challenge of change.  It doesn’t matter if later, I have to undo the decision with another decision or stay active in the new change.

When you are face with options in your relationships, educating yourself, leading or following a certain career path or if you should continue, halt or abandoned the opprotunity to change; ask your self does it get me back to ______________.   In my case my ____________: is happy.

If my sister was correct in the quote given at the beginning of this blog post, and if you believe in something greater then yourself; perhaps you to could draw from her quote to aid you in making your decisions.  When in doubt, think those three questions out.  If still unsure and your feeling risky enough to take the dive, remember along the ride; “God only moves out of your way, what was in your way in the first place.”  Therefore a blessing or lesson should never be blocked.  Welcome change, it’s inevitable.
